Fundamentals of Battery Technology

Module description in the MTS

Credits (ECTS): 6LP (4 SWS)


The module "Fundamentals of Battery Technology" provides an overview of the theoretical fundamentals and the mostly used  cell technologies that are commercially available today. The module is split into five parts as follows:

The first topic deals with the electrochemical fundamentals. Students learn what an electrochemical cell consists of, where the cell's potential comes from, how it is calculated and the cell's behaviour under discharge or charge conditions respectively. Afterwards, the measuring method electrochemical impedance spectroscopy that is specific for the diagnosis of electrochemical systems is introduced. Its possibilities, specialities and boundaries are discussed. Based on this knowledge, the three most important cell technologies are investigated thoroughly. For each technology, i. e. lead-acid-batteries, lithium-ion-batteries and supercaps, the functionality, the structure, the used materials, cell ageing, performance capabilities and each special features are presented. Along the way, the different technologies are compared gradually and related to their specific areas of application. Eventually, the module is closed by discussing different charging methods and a simplified approach on how to layout a whole batterypack, based on single cells.

The module consists of a weekly lecture and a weekly practice. To complete the module successfully a written exam has to be passed at the end of the semester.
