Battery packs are applied in wide scope of applications (e.g. stationary, mobile devices, etc.) at varying conditions (e.g. power load, cyclic load, etc.). As a battery pack consists of several battery cells, the battery pack life depends on single cell characteristics and properties. An investigation of ageing mechanisms and an assessment of influencing factors (e.g. manufacturing defects, production tolerances, material dependent parameters, etc.) is mainly performed by post-mortem-analysis. Here, single cells are opened during or after ageing and inspected for changes concerning the structure or material composition in order to enable conclusions about occurring processes and potential optimization measures or further development of new battery concepts. In addition, obtained geometrical and material data can be processed to create or precise physical-chemical models.

Depending on the studied battery technology (e.g. coin cells, round cells or pouch cells), the opening and further analysis have to be performed under certain conditions. The cell disassembly for example needs to be handled under protective atmosphere (e.g. using a glovebox) shielding the battery components from the influence of air, water and nitrogen. For analysis a broad range of techniques (e.g. laser-scanning-microscope, wet-chemical) is available requiring not only expertise about the features of the technical device, but also about electro-chemical processes concerning the battery cells.
